Simple science tricks you can try at home

Have you ever wondered how magicians pass a coin through a bottle? Or do you have any idea of the strength of friction?

All was revealed when City of Culture presenter Kofi Smiles visited the University of Hull to preview the Hull Science Festival.

Kofi, who is the BBC’s Face of Hull 2017, met up with Festival Director Mark Lorch and science outreach Officer Phil Bell Young, who is presenting the Science of Superheroes Show at the festival this weekend.

Professor Lorch said:

“The idea was to trial some of the science festival activities to Kofi.

“We basically ran through a load of our science busking demos, highlighted the way that we use them to show how accessible science can be.

“You don’t need a lab, fancy equipment and a load of degrees to enjoy science. Anyone can experiment with scientific phenomena with a bunch of household materials.”

A five-minute video of the tricks demonstrated by Professor Lorch and Phil Bell Young has since been uploaded to the Hull 2017 UK City of Culture website.

A super short version of the friction trick can also be viewed on Facebook.

The Hull Science Festival takes place on Sunday, April 2, and is free to enter but tickets must be booked in advance. Tickets are still available for some of the shows and lectures. Please keep checking the website for late ticket availability.
